Energy policy, nukes, UAE, and incompetence

The Bush Administration, and now the Obama Administration have recognized the need of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to become independent from the need to import natural gas from outside sources. So, the Obama Administration has approved to transfer nuclear technology to the UAE.

This friends, is appalling.

First, yeap, I agree that if they do not get the technology from us, they would get it from France, or Germany, or Russia. But, why give others our nuclear secrets, even if they are not so secret? As usual, they will eventually be used against us.

Second, we are giving the nuclear secrets because the UAE recognized that importing energy producing natural gas is not only a drain of their money, but a source of potential blackmail. Natural resources needed to fulfill crucial needs of a Nation are their weakest link, anybody with the proper mind frame and ability could potentially bring such nation to their knees.

That is why the U.S. is in such precarious position, having to import oil from the Middle East, Canada, Venezuela, Mexico, etc.

What does the fact that the UAE are counting on nuclear power to drop their dependence on foreign natural resources by producing electricity from nuclear power teaches us?

Two things:

1.       Nuclear power is a viable source of power.

2.       It is smart to become energy independent.

So, how could we apply these lessons?

1.       Imitate France and produce around 70% of our electricity from nuclear power.

2.       Let’s drill our own oil out of the Continental shell and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Unfortunately, our politicians are more interested on catering to extreme private interest groups, rather than help us become energy independent.

You do not become energy independent by reducing the amount of energy you consume, but by producing the majority of the energy you consume. Right now, if we did just that, we would have a multibillion dollar surplus every month, since we would not have to send the money to our oil suppliers. At the same time, by producing our energy, we produce more jobs, a new industrial area would emerge, producing countless jobs, thus stimulating our economy.

But, what do I know? Politicians are the real experts. Or, are they?

No, not really.

Our elected officials, for the most part, use their time and the job that we trusted them with (scary thought) undermining the Constitution, or, like John Murtha, trying to help their families make multimillions of dollars by renting empty space to the Department of Defense, or like Barney Frank, getting a job for his boyfriend at either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac (I don’t remember which).

Or, like Nancy Pelosi, getting briefed and not paying attention to the briefings.

What do you say? How about making a push to vote those bums out?
